Transit Mail Office (TMO) – A branch of RMS where closed bags are received and dispatched. Sorting of letters is not done in this unit. Mail Agent or Mail Guard is in charge of this unit. This can function in a number of sets depending upon requirements.

**A Record Office is a stationary office of the Railway Mail Service where the work-papers of the sections attached to it are prepared, checked and placed on record, and by which all forms, bags and stationery required for the use of those sections are supplied. The official in-charge of a Record Office is designated a Record Officer.

The working hours of the Post Offices are generally fixed by the Head of the Circle according to the timings given in Clause 5 of the Post Office Guide.

The Director General (DG) may extend the working hours of any Post Office up to 8:30 p.m. and keep them open on Sundays also. Such Post Offices are called Night Post Offices.

A Night Post Office will transact only those transactions which have been authorized by the Director General.

The Divisional Head or the independent Gazetted Postmaster of the Post Office shall be the Licensing Authority for the issuance of a license for using a Franking Machine (RMFM).
